The Noticing Week

"Every time you reach for a tool, just notice it. You don't have to stop yourself. You don't have to change anything. Just notice. Why am I reaching for this. What am I asking it to do. Is the part I'm outsourcing the polishing or the thinking. And do I know the difference, in this case."

Planned for release phase 2. The page is complete as a draft; interactive parts run in the browser and do not yet save to an account.

In brief

Seven days. Keep a count, in your head or on the tally sheet, of every reach for an AI tool, and for each one answer: reflex or thinking? polishing or thinking? From day four, add a second count: the moments you stayed quiet or deferred to someone else's caution instead of forming your own view. Do not change any behaviour. Awareness is the first muscle, and it gets sore.

Why noticing comes before changing

The Dependency Trap has no negative signal; the only way to see it is to look. In the book Arjun counts nine reaches on Monday, decides six were reflex, and by Wednesday discovers something he had not expected: his reflexes were not about the hard technical work, which he was still doing himself. They were about the in-between parts — the status update, the Slack reply that had to sound thoughtful, the email that had to be polite without being apologetic. The small choices, which is where voice lives. He had been outsourcing the part where he became himself.

The Habitual Dependent's roadmap begins here for a reason: until you can tell the moment you reach because you do not want to think from the moment the thinking is done and the tool is the right next step, the framework cannot protect you.

Days 1–3 · the reach

Days 4–7 · the silence

What to expect

The count will drop by midweek — partly because you are noticing earlier, partly because you are now performing for an internal audience that did not exist last week. Try not to confuse the two. By Thursday you will be tired of your own counting; that is the muscle working. And at some point the week will hand you a moment that is not on either count — a colleague sitting motionless at a desk, a sentence someone says that you cannot answer. That moment is usually the actual lesson of the week.

After the week

Look at where the reaches clustered. If they were the in-between parts, the small communications, you now know where your voice has been leaking. If they were the hard parts, you know which muscle to rebuild first. Either way, the next move is one project through the First Fortnight. If you are a Habitual Dependent by the AMQ, do the week twice before you start.
