The Two-Step Prompting cheat-sheet
Step 5 on paper: the three things to prepare before engaging any tool, and the two-step method for briefing it.
Use your browser's print dialogue and choose "Save as PDF" for a file.
Before you open the tool
1. Full context — what is this for, who is it for, the situation, the constraints, what to avoid
2. Expected output — format, length, depth, scope
3. Success criteria — written NOW, before you see anything
Step A — communicate like a human
Paste the three boxes in plain language, the way you would brief a smart colleague new to the project. Examples if you have them.
Step B — let the AI optimise its own instructions
"Given what I just told you, write me an optimised prompt that captures all of this, in the format you'd respond to best." Read it. Edit one line if needed. Use it.
You bring clarity. The tool brings technical optimisation. Amplification, not prompt engineering.
