Riya, 17: behind in Physics, bored in Maths

In brief
The situation. Riya is in Class 11 at a school in Nashik and goes to a coaching class four evenings a week. In Physics she is drowning — rotational motion arrived before she had made peace with vectors, and every week the class moves on whether she is ready or not. In Maths she is bored to the point of resentment; the class spends three days on a chapter she understood in an hour, and she has started doing Physics homework under the desk during it. Her parents' answer is another tutor. Her own answer, until now, was ChatGPT — paste the problem, copy the solution, feel calm for twenty minutes, learn nothing.
Step 1 — Define the End State
She writes it on a Sunday, by hand, because her cousin tells her to: "By the end of the term I want to solve a rotational-motion problem on the board without my stomach dropping. In Maths I want to be a chapter ahead of the class, so the class becomes revision instead of a cage. I want my mother to stop asking about another tutor." Three audiences, all named: the maths sir, her mother, herself on the board.
Step 2 — Map the Flow
Her own list: find where Physics actually broke (not rotational motion — earlier), fix that, then catch up chapter by chapter; in Maths, get the syllabus, read ahead, and find problems harder than the class gives. AI, asked what she has missed, adds two things: a diagnostic first — a short test on the last three chapters to locate the exact break rather than guessing — and a weekly time budget, because "catch up" without hours attached is a wish. It suggests a third: joining an online problem-solving community. She declines; it is another thing to keep up with.
Step 3 — Assign Tasks
Deciding what "understood" means for each topic: hers. Building the diagnostic test: AI, verifiable, low cost. Explaining a concept she failed: AI as tutor — generate the explanation, but she does the worked example. Choosing which harder Maths problems to attempt: AI generates a graded list; she chooses. Doing the problems: hers, on paper, always.
Step 4 — Select the Tool
A conversational text tool with long context, because she feeds it her textbook chapters and her wrong answers and needs back-and-forth. Nothing else; the frequency is daily, so she sets up one project with the syllabus in it and reuses it.
Step 5 — Prepare and Direct
Her criteria, written before the first session: the tool must never give me the final answer to a problem I am attempting; it must ask me a question back after every explanation; an explanation counts as working only if I can redo the example with different numbers, closed-book, the next morning. She briefs it in plain language — "I am a Class 11 student, this is the chapter, this is what I got wrong, teach me the way a patient tutor would" — and asks it to turn that into a standing instruction it follows every day.
Steps 6 and 7 — Execute and Evaluate
The diagnostic finds the break: it was cross products, two chapters before rotational motion, taught in a week she was ill. Three tutoring sessions on that alone. Then the next-morning test — the criterion — fails twice. Both times she had read the explanation and nodded. Reading is not the muscle. She changes the brief: no explanation longer than five lines before a question is asked of her. Maths: the tool generates a ladder of problems a chapter ahead; she chooses the five hardest each week and does them on paper.
Step 8 — Integrate and Stress-Test
Six weeks in she assembles the whole thing against her Sunday page. Physics: she can do rotational motion at the board, tested by her cousin over a video call. Maths: two chapters ahead, and the class has become, exactly as she wrote, revision. Small fix: her weekly hours had drifted into Maths because it was more fun; she rebalances. Structural: her mother still wants the tutor — because Riya never told her what she was doing. A Step 1 miss: she named her mother as an audience and then never showed her the work. She shows her the diagnostic and the before-and-after. The tutor conversation ends.
What changed
The same tool that had been making her hollow — paste, copy, calm, nothing — became the thing that rebuilt the muscle, because she changed what she asked it for. Tutor, not substitute. The next-morning closed-book test is the whole framework in one habit: criteria set before the output, evaluated the next day.
Diagnose before you catch up — the break is usually earlier than the pain. Write the rule "never give me the answer" into the tool as a standing instruction. Test yourself the morning after, closed-book; nodding is not understanding.
