The Apprentice

You have recently arrived.

Planned for release phase 2. The page is complete as a draft; interactive parts run in the browser and do not yet save to an account.

In brief

Amplifier Amplifier · Band 1. You have recently arrived. The framework is something you apply, deliberately, on each project; you are still aware of the steps as steps and sometimes have to remind yourself which one you are on. The discipline is real but visible. You may have come here from one of the traps and carry residue from where you came. In your good moments you know you are working differently from before; you are still slightly uncertain whether you are doing it right. This is the most common Amplifier placement and the one most readers of the book land at if they have done the work.

The work

Keep practising. Apply the framework across more domains — the surest way to find where your residue lives. Watch the three risks. The move to Practitioner usually takes twelve to eighteen months of working in this register.

Risks to watch

Two or three of these will appear on your result, chosen for your pattern of answers. Work on one at a time.

Residual trap behaviour

If you came from dependency, in stress moments you will reach for the tool before doing the thinking. If you came from avoidance — the Avoider Shadow — you will still under-use tools in domains where you have not yet built the muscle. The residue is normal. Notice it. It does not mean the placement is wrong.

The Convert's Risk

You will want to teach this to people who have not asked. You will see Dependents and Avoiders everywhere. Do not walk over and offer the framework; most of them are not ready. Be visible as someone who has clearly figured something out. The people who need it will find you the way you found it.

Framework as Friction

The full eight-step sequence on a five-minute task is friction, not discipline. Knowing the difference is judgement, and judgement at this band is still developing. Notice when you over-apply and right-size next time.

Your roadmap

One project per month through the framework in a domain you have not tried — personal, not just professional. Keep a note of each time you catch a residue moment. Retake in six months.

Read: Chapters 9, 11 and 13.

The placement is the diagnosis. The work is everything that happens after.
