In brief
What Step 1 looks like here: Not "make the video" or "design the identity", but the specific feeling you want a specific person to have, written out in full sentences, alone, before any tool is involved. In creative work the end state is almost always a person and a feeling, never a deliverable.
Two cases in the book belong to this field, and they sit at opposite ends of it. Vivek, a senior marketing professional, walks through a ninety-second explainer video for a fintech app: an hour alone with a notepad defining what a thirty-year-old urban professional should feel when she watches it; AI generating script drafts against a brand-voice document and criteria written in advance; Midjourney for storyboard moodboards; a tonal problem caught at final integration — excellent in pieces, slightly cold as a whole — and traced back to an end state that said "confident but not slick" when it should have said "the way an older sibling would explain a new investment idea to you, not the way a banker would".
Then Kavya, a second-year art student in Nagpur, overwhelmed by a festival she has been put in charge of, in a department where a professor spent a whole studio on why the tools are theft. She runs the same eight steps, unchanged, on a completely non-technical problem, and holds one line for herself throughout: the tools can build the scaffolding — budget, schedule, sponsor research, first-draft emails, the identity roughed out and iterated fast — but the art on the walls stays entirely, uncompromisingly human. "The intern, not the artist. Hand it the drowning. Keep the art."
When her identity subcommittee, told only to "make it striking", returns something beautiful and generic, she does not fix the posters. She gives them the girl at the gate — the specific person the whole festival is for — and lets them redo it. Three days later it comes back unmistakably hers.
